Random question inspired by learning the new small Lambo will not have a manual option :(

So after a quick look at Autotrader I wonder if I was a rich gentleman what would I choose. The arguably better looking (interior & exterior) and faster !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with only 1.5k on the clock ….

So do you pony up and get the Italian stallion, or be sensible and settle with 420hp in the grey German?

I wouldn't get either of those. Never liked the Gallardo and the R8 is the most vanilla thing in its class.

I'm going to have to go Lamborghini on this one. The Audi is a super car but the Lamborghini is an experience!

This was originally supposed to be between that and the Gallardo. But I couldn't even find one on auto trader. Very upsetting …. rich people suck.

Maybe I'm just old and grumpy, but whenever I see a gated stick I just think about how difficult would that be to clean inside.

I also don't see manuals as anything special and maybe I'm a bit jaded about them, probably because that's pretty much all I've been using (granted, none of them were gated). I kinda want to daily something with an autobox now.

The shifter might not be gated, but the engine is supercharged and it does burnouts. They're going for more, but hey, I'm rich now . Right?

I don't have either but think about this very topic ALL the time. I've read a lot about both cars and have test driven an Audi R8 V10. I could probably write up a few pages on the topic. But I'll try to summarize and just give you a few comments centered around specific sub-topics. The cars do share a lot but have some pretty big differences so the answer to your question comes down to more than cost and HP. It comes down to how the car will be used and what the goals of ownership are.

Topic 1: Driveability

If you're like me and don't have kids or need to shuttle people around for work then you can DD a 2 seater. If you want to DD an awesome mid-engine car then the Audi is the better choice. It has the magnetic ride control dampers that the Corvette and Ferraris have. And its setup more as an exotic GT than an exotic sports car. I've read that the Audi can be taken on long road trips no prob but the Gallardo is pretty jarring over crap roads. If your commute includes crap roads then the Audi will be a lot more comfortable.

The Audi has a bigger cabin, which also makes it a little easier to live with as a DD.

The R8 can be serviced at any Audi dealership that is certified to work on it. There are a lot more of those than the Gallardo. Which makes it easier to rely on the Audi as your main car since help is always close by. I'm sure you'll get the best loaner in the lot every time you come in.

Rear visibility is supposed to be better from the Audi.

The R8 sticks out a bit less than the Gallardo because it's more common and not as aggressive looking. Which makes it more driveable in more situations as attracting attention can be a bad thing if you want to use a car a lot.

As posted above, it was just from one too many hard shifts. It was NOT a babied car. He actually got rid of it for an R8 V10 Spyder, but that was the R-Tronic, not manual :(

Topic 2: Performance & Depreciation

If you're more concerned with performance than comfort then go Lambo. It's lighter and has a more aggressive suspension setup.

The extra HP and torque from the V10 is significant. And the interesting thing is that the 2009+ Gallardo's V10 is surprisingly fuel efficient for how much N/A power it has. The DFI V10 in the later Gallardos is the same as the R8 V10 with some small mods. The fuel economy isn't terrible compared to the R8 V8. The reliability should be similar too and the car probably will hold its value better in the long run than the R8 V8. So if someone can afford the extra $60K it's worth it as there are not any downsides to the larger engine.

The 2009 and up Gallardo received a lot of improvements over the earlier cars. I've read that while all Gallardo's share the same name there is no comparison between how a 2004-2005 Gallardo drives and a 2009-2013 Gallardo drives. The 2nd iteration of the Gallardo is the most modern Italian exotic you can purchase with a gated manual (since the F430 ended in 2009 and the refreshed Gallardo is a more modern car than it). This should help long term values. I wouldn't be surprised if the later 6MT Gallardo values (especially the RWD Balboni and Bicolor) hit the bottom of their depreciation curve by 2017 and start going up little by little after that. If you maintained the car well and put 5,000 or less miles on it a year it might one day be worth over $300K (not counting inflation)

Topic 3: Wow Factor

If you're spending this much on a car you probably want it to be special. If you've worked hard and saved up just enough to have the R8 and a beater then that's the best you can do and the R8 is perfect. It will be awesome to you and you can use it as much as you want to. But if you can afford either of these cars without stressing too much then you can probably afford to have one or two other cars. You'd probably have a small or midsize sports sedan and an SUV or something like that. So you wouldn't need to DD the supercar and would want it to knock your socks off every time you drive it. So for that you go Gallardo.

Looks are subjective. But I think most would agree that the Gallardo (especially a 2009 car) looks better. More girls will think so. If you want your supercar to be a "panty dropper" then the Gallardo is the safer bet ;)

Sounds are less subjective. I would guess that at least 7 out of 10 people would think that the Gallardo sounds better than both the V8 and V10 R8s. I've researched this matter and read that the Gallardo sounds different than the R8 V10 not only because of the exhaust. Modifications were made to the engine to make it have the nastier bark. If you want a true exotic sounding car then go Gallardo. You could probably modify the R8 V10 to sound just like a Gallardo but who knows how much it would cost. It would probably not be worth it and better to just get the Lambo.

While the R8 has a great interior it does feel a lot like being in a more common Audi. That's not a bad thing because Audis have great interiors. But it doesn't feel exotic to be in a car that reminds you of being in an A4/A6/etc. Some of the details in the Gallardo make the interior look and feel more exotic, which also helps with the wow factor.

You could probably find one with E Gear pretty easily. But finding one with the stick would be hard.

The E Gear cars are both easier to find in the color combo you want and cheaper. Especially the earlier years.

I bet a 2004-2005 E Gear car with 40,000 miles on it will drop down to $45K by 2020. It would be tempting at that point, despite not having a stick.

The 6MT cars will probably hold their value much better

You think so? Everyone and their uncle wants the gated shifter. And it seems like less than 15% of all the cars sold had it.

I could see some people paying a premium for the last Italian exotic with a gated shifter

Kinja'd!!! Dsscats > Manuél Ferrari
01/23/2014 at 20:09

Kinja'd!!!0

I think that less than 15% sold for a good reason. It's a great tranny, but people are lazy, and that especially applies to the people buying it used who, 80% of the time, buy it as a status symbol

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Dsscats
01/23/2014 at 20:18

Kinja'd!!!0

I have a similar but somewhat modified theory.

I do think that laziness and being able to drive the cars in heavy traffic in cities such as LA is part of it. But I don't think those factors are the #1 factors.

I think the status symbol factor that you brought up is the #1 factor. I think the people that can afford to buy them brand new really care about stats. They want to be able to brag about their 0-60 and 0-100 times. And they want to be able to brag about how fast their car would be around the Ring, even if they never go to the track themselves. They want to outdo the stats of the cars that their rich friends and neighbors have. So they don't get the 6MT because that hurts stats.

It's really unfortunate because I think the majority of people who can only afford to buy the cars used at some later date prefer the gated shifter. But you're limited to what is available in the used marketplace.
